The Florida Keys Dive Region is split into four areas: Key Largo, Key Islamorada, Key Marathon and Key West. This location is awash with many shipwrecks from over 400 years ago, partly due to the fact it is a major shipping lane and also because of the dangerous reefs and shoals scattered across the area. Even today Mariners must take the utmost care in avoiding the shallow reefs and shoals that line this region.
Ironically the dangerous reefs and shoals undoubtably make this area one of the jewels of the USA for reef diving. The warm gulf stream passes through here bringing nutrient-rich waters to the ecosystems, in turn making it extremely worthwhile to scuba divers.
